Speech Title: Ca2+ signalling in animal cells: how and why?
Prof. Geneviève Dupont is working on models for the dynamics of intracellular Ca2+, in order to help uncovering the mechanism of the Ca2+ oscillations and waves and their physiological implications in animal systems.
In response to external stimulation, many cell types exhibit repetitive variations in their level of cytosolic Ca2+. These oscillations, initiated by an increase in inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3), can be ascribed to a regulation known as Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release (CICR) by which Ca2+ activates its own release from intracellular stores into the cytosol. Each Ca2+ spike is also spatially organized, as the initially localized Ca2+ increase propagates through the cell as a Ca2+ wave. These oscillations and waves possess important physiological implications as, for example, in the regulation of contraction, secretion or in the resumption of the cell cycle at fertilization.
